After Thunderous Domestic Response, ‘Tumbbad’ Going International?

Words are doing rounds on social media that ‘Tumbbad’ is soon to release in the U.S. Ain’t that exciting and fabulous to see a film that went under the radar upon its initial theatrical release, slowly created a cult of its own and now after its massive re-release in India, is going international.

According to the buzz Sohum Shah’s production banner Sohum Shah Films is in talks with a prominent U.S. distributor for ‘Tumbbad’s’ release there.

‘Tumbbad’ has got a re-birth with this re-release and the humongous efforts of the whole team which went under appreciated the first time is finally getting its so rightly deserved due six years later.

If the reports are to be believed it will be an amazing move to take ‘Tumbbad’ international and show the world how impactful our folklores are and how creatively genius Indian cinema can be. It will also help put forth a side of the Indian film industry that’s beyond songs, romance, dance and action.

Not saying that we haven’t had content based films before but they often do not get such public response, even if they are critically acclaimed. What makes it more relevant in ‘Tumbbad’s’ case is that it’s happening years after its release and that reflects how important a role good word-of-mouth plays for any film.

If not for the re-release the conversations for ‘Tumbbad’ would not have had people involved so deeply and dearly with the film and unfortunately its impact would have been limited to a small group of cinephiles who recognised its potential the first time itself. So even if these reports anbout going international are not correct, we can urge Sohum Shah to make it true and take ‘Tumbbad’ beyond borders and show the world its brilliance.
