Tumbbad, a horror masterpiece, has rightfully earned cult classic status. Its recent re-release has only fueled its popularity. Similarly, the re-release of Laila Majnu proved surprisingly successful, continuing to draw audiences even after a month.
Before the pandemic, mainstream films typically had a theatrical run of two weeks, followed by new releases. However, now, even re-releases are enjoying extended runs. Imtiaz Ali’s films, known for their rewatch value, have demonstrated this through the box office success of Rockstar and Laila Majnu. Other notable examples include Gangs of Wasseypur and Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein.
Is this a new trend, or are audiences simply tired of new releases? One factor could be the immersive experience of watching films on a 70mm screen. Many re-releases are films that may have been overlooked upon initial release, and audiences now want to experience them in the best possible format. Additionally, lower ticket prices for re-releases have proven to be a successful strategy in drawing crowds.
Given the success of these re-releases, PVR Inox, India’s largest film exhibition company, is considering making them a permanent feature.
What are your thoughts on this idea? And which classic films would you like to see re-released on the big screen?
