Jigra's Underperformance: Not a Gender Issue

Ever heard the phrase “all that glitters is not gold”? Jigra similarly showed great promise in its initial stage. The promotions screamed success, and the film even tried to venture down south, with endorsements from stars like Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

However, despite all the fanfare, when it came time to deliver, the film failed to ignite. Not only did it flop at the box office, but it also marked one of the worst openings in Alia Bhatt’s filmography. In the aftermath, it’s all too easy to pin the blame on the “female-led” narrative, but is that really the core issue?

The data speaks for itself. Jigra has underperformed during its opening weekend. The numbers should have been significantly higher, especially when compared to Alia’s previous successes with Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) and Raazi (2018)—both of which opened to much stronger numbers. So, what went wrong?

One critical factor is Jigra’s urban-centric appeal, which severely limits its reach. The film failed to resonate beyond major urban centers, leading to a lackluster response in mass circuits. This is telling; when a film struggles to connect with a broader audience, it’s not simply a matter of its lead being female. It’s about the film’s content and how it speaks to diverse demographics.

Moreover, the film’s marketing strategy appears to have missed the mark. While the star power of Alia Bhatt and the associated promotions might attract urban viewers, they do little to bridge the gap with mass audiences. This disconnect can lead to disappointing box office results, especially in an industry that thrives on universal appeal.

Notably, one such successful marketing was Stree 2. The film not only appealed to the metropolitan audience, it had something for everyone and thus it dominated over the box-office for more than a month. Same happened with Kalki. Though Kalki is fundamentally not a female led film, Stree 2 was being marketed as one which definitely became one of its strongest suits.

Looking ahead, Jigra has an uninterrupted run until Diwali, which presents a chance to recover its losses. However, for the film to secure a respectable total in its first week, it is imperative that the numbers stabilize from Monday to Thursday and show consistent growth. The ability of the film to sustain its momentum will ultimately determine its fate, but as of now…the performance is weaker than one can anticipate.
