Reboot and Comeback: The Key to Longevity for Bollywood Stars?

Reboot and Comeback The Key to Longevity for Bollywood Stars

Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn are two of the senior-most stars who have been consistently delivering hits since the 90s. Though they may not have achieved the same iconic status as the Khans, they are certainly not far behind in terms of film choices and successes. While the Khans, particularly Shah Rukh and Salman, have dominated their respective genres of romance and action, Akshay and Ajay have established a perfect balance between commercial and content-driven cinema.

Akshay Kumar’s filmography is filled with masala action movies, but he has also taken on social dramas and serious roles, which have elevated his stature in the industry. In the latter half of the 2010s, Akshay was one of the most profitable actors in Bollywood. On the other hand, Ajay Devgn, who entered the industry with a sincere and intense presence in action films like “Phool Aur Kaante”, “Dilwale”, and “Diljale”, helped define the quintessential Indian masala movies with romance, action, and a larger-than-life villain.

However, like Akshay, Ajay also created a great balance by doing mainstream, crowd-pleasing films while also taking on serious and dark-themed movies such as “Raincoat”, “Omkara”, and “The Legend of Bhagat Singh”. Now, with both stars having passed their prime in terms of age, let’s look at their upcoming projects. Ajay and Akshay are set to team up for the upcoming movie “Singham 3”, scheduled to release on November 1, 2024. Whether the movie succeeds will depend on its quality and marketing.

As seen with Akshay Kumar, taking a break for a year might prove beneficial, similar to Shah Rukh Khan’s recent success after a break. The same could apply to Ajay Devgn. Constant appearances can dull the spark of a star. For instance, after the failure of “Laal Singh Chaddha”, Aamir Khan took a break. Do you think Akshay and Ajay should also consider taking a break to introspect and plan their future careers more strategically?
