All We Imagine As Light gained global attention earlier this year winning the Grand Prix in the Cannes Film Festival. And recently another feature film by a British-Indian filmmaker has gained attention as it has been selected as UK’s official entry in the Oscars for the category of Best Foreign Language Film.
The film Santosh by Sandhya Suri has been selected as the UK’s official submission for the Oscars. It is a Hindi feature film set in a rural setting of Northern India. The film revolves around Santosh (played by Shahana Goswami) who is a widow undertaking her husband’s job as a police constable, who then undertakes the job of investigating the murder of a woman from a lower caste.
The film has already garnered a lot of critical acclaim for its great performances and engaging narrative. Previously the movie also premiered at Cannes 2024 in the Un Certain Regard competition. The film also looks forward for a release in the US by Metrograph pictures. Being a film submitted for the Oscars, it will definitely gain some attention there.
Last year, the UK entered the Oscars with Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest which bagged the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as well as for Best Sounds. Considering this, people will have an eye on the UK’s submission this year as well. Hopefully, Santosh will gain a great attention and as many consider, it might as well grab an Oscar as well.
Everyone eyes the Oscars fingers crossed hoping that Santosh might find some acclaim. After years of limited exposure and acknowledgements, such a gesture is finally shaping Indian films and filmmakers on the global stage.
