This Dussehra Is Not So Festive For Hindi Films

Friday, 11th October saw the release of two films in the Bollywood. One being Alia Bhatt starrer Jigra and the other Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video starring Rajkummar Rao and Tripti Dimri. The two films made a substantial opening of 4.5 crores and 5.5 crores each. The next day, being a Saturday, had a chance for the films to increase their revenue. Added to it, on the same day Dussehra was being celebrated (which is a national holiday) that further increased the chance for a hike in collection. But the results were quite unexpected.

Usually, films, that too, new releases, expect to see a 70% hike in collections in a holiday. The hike can be even more. But Jigra saw a meagre increase of 45% compared to its first day collection. On the second day the film earned 6.5 crores amounting to a total of 11 crores for the two days.

The hike in case of VVKWWV, was even less. The film could only gather 25% extra revenue as compared to the first day. The film managed about 6.75 crores compared to the first day collection of 5.5 crores. Compared to the previous film of Rajkummar that became an All-Time Blockbuster, this is a very worrisome report.

Supposedly, the films could not impress the audience with the content they brought on screen. In the case of Alia’s film, the plot could not resonate with the audience and hence could not gain much attention. This is the reason it failed in most small towns.

In the case of Rajkummar, his previous achievement became problematic for the success of this film. People had very high expectations from him after Stree 2. But VVKWWV didn’t fulfil that expectation. As a result, the audience didn’t show any enthusiasm towards it, even though the film was decent enough.

Both the films also are under controversies that further amounts to their lack of popularity. VVKWWV has faced certain allegations including plagiarism of a previous script. It was also accused of taking advantage of Rajkummar’s popularity in Stree 2 by copying a dialogue from the film. Jigra too faced a lot of backlash around the fake bookings for the film to show it going housefull. These controversies certainly lowered the film’s potential as it had been before.

The two films currently struggle in the theatres to create a good name for themselves. Amidst films like Vettaiyan and Martin, they are trying to find their place among audience.
