Horror movies have had an incredible year at the box office, and Sohum Shah’s Tumbbad, which is getting a second chance at the box office, is poised to change its fortunes. Though it is performing better than Kareena Kapoor Khan’s recent movie, The Buckingham Murders, the first day’s ticket sales indicate that Rahi Anil Barve’s film could be another unexpected smash of the year.
The horror movie sold almost 40,000 tickets on its first day, which is amazing given that it is the fourth-highest ticket sales of the movies presently showing in theaters. The Buckingham Murders, on the other hand, took a slow start with 21,000 tickets on the first day.
Speaking of the weekend, Tumbbad’s Sunday numbers might just shock everyone. The re-released film garnered a total of 86.3k tickets on Sunday in comparison to The Buckingham Murders’ 31k tickets. Comparing the total weekend of both films, Tumbbad has overtaken a lot of films in terms of total tickets sold in the opening weekend.
Sohum Shah’s horror sold 2.30 lakh tickets on its opening weekend on BookMyShow beating The Buckingham Murders (0.95 lakh), Sarfira(2.05 lakh), Khel Khel Mein(1.90 lakh), Vedaa(1.60 Lakh), Auron Me Kahan Dum Tha (0.90 lakh) and several other top films.
In addition to surpassing its first-weekend receipts, the film’s rerelease this year has brought in over half of its lifetime earnings—Rs 13.48 crore in 2018. The Buckingham Murders, starring Kareena Kapoor, is a rival to Tumbbad.
Day 1 earnings for the BookMyShow -directed murder mystery were Rs 1.15 crore net, followed by Day 2 earnings of Rs 2.15 crore net and Day 3 earnings of Rs 1.95 crore net. Only time will tell if the competition between these two giants gets more fierce in the upcoming weeks.
