Why Is Disney+ Hotstar Not Getting Over Daily Soap Dramas

Disney+ Hotstar today launched a new Hotstar Special series ‘Thukra Ke Mera Pyar’ and this one once again looks and feels like a clichéd daily soap drama better suited for television.

‘Thukra Ke Mera Pyar’ launch video shows a young savage girl Shanvika Chauhan falling for a shy and simple boy who apparently ain’t interested in her initially. But she persistently pursues him and even kisses him, eventually he starts to feel something for her too. But the girl is probably from a strict, orthodox family who when find out about their relation thrash up the boy badly.

It all feels very obsolete with a story that has been overused and from the looks of it there doesn’t seem to be any new angle in ‘Thukra Ke Mera Pyar’. The performances feel a bit overdone too.

Well this ain’t the first time Disney+ Hotstar is bringing a daily soap like drama on the platform. There has been ‘Aashiqana’ and ‘Gunaah’ before this and to be honest they were equally cringe. Even ‘Commander Karan Saxena’ or ‘Reeta Sanyal’ weren’t much good either.

The only plausible reason Disney+ Hotstar keeps making such shows is to target a set of household audience, mostly from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, that are fond of television dramas like these.

After all Disney+ Hotstar is smart enough to know what content works for what kind of audience and with such shows it attempts to cater to a wider and deeper range of viewers and not just the elite few.
