The haunting tale of “Tumbbad” has now become a significant phenomenon in the Bollywood industry, surpassing all previous re-releases. Audiences are beginning to understand the depth of the story and the message it aimed to deliver.
Once a cult classic, it now has a fandom of its own. The phrase “actions speak louder than words” holds true for “Tumbbad”.
But a twist occurred when Sohum Shah announced a sequel, “Tumbbad Part Two.”
Now, the question is, will history repeat itself, or is there a mistake waiting to be unlocked?
In “Tumbbad”, we saw the entire story of Vinayak Rao, who, at the beginning of the film, promises his mother that he will never return to the village of Tumbbad. Yet, 15 years later, the cycle repeats itself. Like his grandmother, Vinayak, too, is consumed by greed.
In the second half of the film, he teaches his son Pandurang how to climb a rope and takes him to the cave of Hastar. But, in the end, Vinayak is cursed by Hastar and offers gold coins to his son, which Pandurang refuses, symbolizing the end of his family’s chain of greed.
But now the question remains—will it stay that way?
Throughout the story, the phrase “you belong to the same blood” is repeatedly mentioned. If we recall an incident from the film, we see Pandurang consumed by lust at an early age, offering a gold coin to his father’s mistress—a sign of something troubling.
Of course, there’s a possibility that Pandurang will break the generational curse, but in the back of his mind, he knows how to collect gold from Tumbbad and how to outsmart Hastar.
We know that we learn from what we see as children. And as a child, Pandurang witnessed his father’s greed.
In the final scene, we see him refusing the gold offered by his father, hinting that, when he grows up, he may run out of money.
“Tumbbad 2” has immense potential to elevate the franchise to a new level, but it could also become a disaster.
The door that Pandurang closed at the end of the first movie—will he reopen it? That’s the question. Now, it’s only a matter of time until we get the answer.
