YRF’s ‘Maharaj’ Defies Norms! Goes For TV Premiere Post Digital

There are two major ways films release in current times: one, in theatres followed by digital and satellite launch; and two, directly on OTT. In the second scenario, films are limited to just their respective platforms and do not go for satellite or what we generally call TV premiere following the digital release.

But Yash Raj Films’ ‘Maharaj’ is defying the norms and is all set to have its world TV premiere on Star Gold tomorrow (October 20) post its direct-to-OTT launch on Netflix.

‘Maharaj’ had its share of controversies before releasing on Netflix and even when it came out, it was met with mostly negative response from the viewers who weren’t impressed at all. But then who knows the TV audience, who isn’t as critical and analytical as the digital audience, might even like it.

Direct-to-OTT came as novel concept during lockdown when going to theatres wasn’t an option. Things have now gone back to normal but the way films release has changed for forever. Makers now know which film would do good in theatres and pull the masses and they also know there are certain content driven, low budget films which aren’t everyone’s cup of tea and these mostly opt for OTT.

Moreover, OTTs has now become a launch pad for new talent who after proving their worth on less risky digital medium are recruited for bigger projects. ‘Maharaj’ was one such film that marked the debut of Junaid Khan but the actor is yet to prove his worth because his performance wasn’t that impressive in the film.

With TV premiere, YRF is trying to target a totally different set of audience, mostly residing in tier 3 cities, which does not have a very easy access to digital platforms. How that turns out for the film will be interesting to see.
