We’ve had many memories with Doordarshan.
From early morning news broadcasts to grainy patriotic films, Shaktimaan episodes, and even the Krishi Vibhaag programs. For many of us, DD National was a defining part of our childhood.
But just as we’ve grown, so has Prasar Bharati.
Its new OTT platform, Waves, is a step towards adapting to modern times and staying relevant in the digital era.
Waves aims to bridge the gap between nostalgia and innovation. Competing with private OTT platforms that thrive on flashy, entertainment-packed content will be a challenge, as they cater to audiences that just want a break after a long day. Waves, however, stays rooted in delivering clean, educational, and culturally rich content.
The platform’s initial lineup includes Fauji 2.0, a modern take on the iconic Shahrukh Khan series from the 1980s, and Kakbhushundi Ramayana, which blends over 350 versions of the Ramayana in a new manner. This reflects its mission to present Indian stories with a global perspective.
Available in over 12 languages, including Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, and Tamil, and spanning 10+ genres of infotainment, Waves has an ambitious vision.
While the concept holds great promise, its success depends highly on execution. Audiences today are accustomed to the high-energy, “cool” content of mainstream platforms, which might make it harder for Waves’ infotainment approach to connect with audiences widely.
Doordarshan shaped our childhood, but becoming an important part of the next generation’s entertainment needs might be a difficult battle. Only time will tell if Waves can strike the perfect balance between tradition and modernity.
