Netflix India’s Kurukshetra is set to arrive tomorrow, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most ambitious takes on the Mahabharata in recent years. With eighteen animated episodes the series promises to retell the great war through the perspectives of multiple warriors, each struggling with questions of duty, loyalty, and morality. It’s a bold step for Netflix India, combining animation, mythology, and emotional storytelling in a way rarely seen on Indian streaming platforms.
But Kurukshetra isn’t the only retelling of the Mahabharata ready to make its way to screens. Just days after its release, audiences will also witness another grand adaptation, an AI-generated version of the Mahabharat, premiering on WAVES OTT on October 25, followed by a weekly telecast on Doordarshan from November 2. This version, created in collaboration with Prasar Bharati and Collective Media Network, uses artificial intelligence to reconstruct the world of the epic with breathtaking realism. Every character has been digitally reimagined to give the story a fresh visual identity while preserving its timeless depth.
While Kurukshetra aims to engage viewers through animation and poetic storytelling, the WAVES version embraces cutting-edge technology to bring mythology into the digital era. It’s fascinating that two completely different mediums of animation and AI-generated cinema are being used at the same time to retell the same timeless story.
Let’s see which one of them gets more attention by the audiences.
