At this point, we should all admit that the Indian television industry was nothing short of a cage for its biggest stars, and those who broke out of that miserable space are now soaring high in the Indian OTT landscape. Since 2018–19, many names have surfaced that have completed the transition from daily soaps to OTT titles. As of February 2026, one name has officially shattered that glass ceiling: Barun Sobti.
If 2011 was the year he became a phenomenon with Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, then 2023–2026 has been the era in which he redefined the very archetype of an Indian leading man. Barun Sobti isn’t just “the next big thing” on OTT, he is currently one of its most consistent and critically acclaimed veterans.
Sobti’s transition wasn’t an overnight success. In the world of daily soaps, actors are often rewarded for dramatic pauses and high-octane emotions. On OTT, Sobti chose the opposite: restraint.
As Nikhil Nair in Asur, Sobti held his own against Arshad Warsi, playing a forensic expert torn between logic and the divine. The show became a cult hit, proving he could anchor a gritty thriller.
But his role as ASI Amarpal Garundi in Netflix’s Kohrra changed the trajectory of his career. Many viewers have declared Season 2 better than the debut chapter, crediting Sobti’s contribution as one of the primary reasons behind that shift.
Even before making such a mammoth impact in Season 2, the actor had already bagged two Filmfare OTT Awards for his outstanding work in Kohrra Season 1 and Raat Jawaan Hai.
Barun Sobti’s upcoming slate further confirms his dominance in the Indian OTT space in 2026. Recent reports indicate that he is currently filming a new Netflix series directed by Sudip Sharma (of Paatal Lok and Kohrra fame), alongside powerhouses Jaideep Ahlawat and Abhishek Banerjee, a casting coup we didn’t know we needed.
Additionally, Sobti is set to star opposite Aditi Rao Hydari in a South Delhi-based romantic comedy for Amazon Prime Video, directed by Konkona Sen Sharma. Moreover, with Asur Season 3 expected to go on floors in mid-2026, his grip on the thriller genre remains undisputed.
As we move deeper into 2026, it’s clear that Barun Sobti is no longer a TV star trying to make it on the web, he is the face of the Indian OTT landscape this year. Stay tuned for more updates.
