Even Kajol Fails to Save a Crumbling The Trial Season 2

The Trial Season 1 opened to a highly polarizing reception from both audiences and critics, with many calling it a poor adaptation of the American show The Good Wife. Yet there was hope that a second season, armed with lessons from the first, could rectify the mistakes. Sadly, that’s not the case. The Trial Season 2 has not only failed to improve but has turned out to be an even bigger disappointment than its predecessor.

The sequel, which sees Kajol reprise her role as Noyonika Sengupta, was supposed to dive deeper into her personal and professional life. The premise promised a compelling mix of legal cases and high-stakes political intrigue as her husband, Rajiv Sengupta (Jisshu Sengupta), embarks on a political career.

Unfortunately, the execution falters on almost every front.

One of the biggest criticisms of Season 2 is its poor, haphazard writing, resulting in a screenplay that often feels disjointed. While the season juggles multiple storylines, it fails to do justice to any of them, leaving several plotlines feeling rushed and half-baked. In addition, the show’s cinematography and editing have been strongly criticized.

Another major complaint is the lack of impactful courtroom drama. The few courtroom scenes we do get lack punch, and while the dialogue can be engaging at times, it frequently veers into melodrama. Key character motivations are also left underdeveloped, making it hard to stay invested.

The one saving grace of The Trial Season 2 is Kajol’s screen-stealing performance. She is the glue holding the entire show together. That said, her character development this season has also drawn criticism. The supporting cast, including Jisshu Sengupta and others, deliver commendable performances but are given very limited scope to shine.

Overall, The Trial Season 2 ends up being a bigger letdown than the debut season. It’s a textbook example of a show with a talented cast brought down by weak writing and scattered storytelling.
