From The Royals to Daldal: Bhumi Pednekar’s OTT Reset

The transition from the big screen to the digital space isn’t always a victory lap. For Bhumi Pednekar, a performer known for delivering strong performances and disappearing into “salt-of-the-earth” characters, her OTT debut with Netflix’s The Royals was a rare but complete misfire. Donned in silks and surrounded by high-society artifice, the show was widely panned by viewers who found the narrative hollow and the casting mismatched.

But as the saying goes, you have to sink before you can swim. With Prime Video’s upcoming thriller Daldal, Pednekar isn’t just swimming. She’s diving headfirst into the muck. And honestly, she has to go through the muck to prove that she is meant to last in the OTT space.

In Daldal, Bhumi steps into the shoes of Rita Ferreira, a newly appointed DCP tackling a series of gruesome murders in Mumbai while navigating her own personal traumas and inner demons. The contrast with The Royals couldn’t be more stark.

Gone are the choreographed ballroom gazes. In their place is the cold, hard stare of a woman chasing a serial killer through the swamp of the city’s underbelly.

The criticism directed at The Royals wasn’t necessarily about Bhumi’s acting, but about the vibe. Bhumi’s strength has always been her natural gravitas, a weightiness she brings to every frame. In a superficial gloss-fest, that weight felt out of place.

Directed by Amrit Raj Gupta and produced by Vikram Malhotra (Abundantia Entertainment), the series promises an intense crime thriller. When Bhumi plays characters burdened by the world, she shines.

For Prime Video, Daldal represents another addition to its growing “cop-verse”, following the success of Paatal Lok and Dahaad. By pairing a powerhouse performer with a dark, psychological procedural, the platform is betting on Bhumi Pednekar, an actor who can command the screen with a single, sweat-streaked look.

Daldal is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on January 30. Stay tuned for more updates.
