Before we begin, we must clarify something. OTT star is not a derogatory term, it is just an acknowledgement of the dynamics of the changing entertainment world where OTT has emerged as a very powerful force. Not only that, becoming a star on OTT is nowhere easy than that of the traditional film stars.
Anyway, let’s look at the filmography of Akshay Kumar. It is severely plagued with flops and disasters. The choice of films and more importantly the way Akshay Kumar works in a film is so bad that people are not even acknowledging his films on the big screens.
On the other hand, he has decades of legacy as an actor so people give his films a second chance on the OTT. As a result, his films are becoming highly successful on OTTs.
Currently, two of his films are crushing the charts. Khel Khel Mein on Netflix India and Sarfira on Disney+Hotstar are doing phenomenally well.
It is also important to see that both of these films were highly unsuccessful at the box office. So, can we say that Akshay Kumar has now transitioned to an OTT star while he used to be a big film star?
Perhaps.
Nothing wrong in saying so. If Kumar wants to retain what he has lost then he needs to give his disciplined body some crazy dose of passion. He needs to work as an artist actor and not merely a 7-12 actor.
