Has OTT Been An Equaliser For Actors Switching Mediums?

Certainly, the emergence of OTT platforms has changed the entertainment industry and given actors a new platform for showing their skills. Has it, however, actually been an equalizer for those transitioning between mediums?

The truth is more complex, even while OTT platforms have given stars from movies and television the chance to redefine themselves.

For example, take Karan Tacker. He’s mostly on television, and it’s surprising how well this OTT space has clicked for him with shows like “Khakee: The Bihar Chapter” and “Special Ops.”

Kritika Kamra, another TV face who had risen to fame because of the same medium, was introduced to a new audience with her OTT projects. These examples of OTT platforms have, in fact, freed the actors from the shackles of their previous mediums and given them the scope to experiment with different roles.

However, the shift is not always seamless. There is a lingering perception of the actors being “TV actors” or “film actors”. The media and industry often tag along with these origins, affecting their entry into new roles.

Thus, it suggests that, although OTT platforms present more opportunities, they still haven’t been able to eliminate the prejudices associated with different mediums.

Actors who were unable to secure significant roles in conventional film continue to benefit from OTT platforms. Due to his role in “Scam 1992,” Pratik Gandhi has gained widespread recognition, something he might not have had in more conventional film.

Also, Actresses like Harman Baweja and Karishma Tanna have used this opportunity to showcase their versatility and receive recognition for their work.

OTT is still not all sunshine and roses, even with these success stories. One of the major concerns raised by the rise of well-known celebrities on these OTT platforms is that they are displacing lesser-known heroes.

Big-name brands’ continued prominence may limit prospects for some up-and-coming talent, even while OTT is helping level the playing field in the content creation industry.

The OTT platforms have given a second lease of life to many actors whose careers had hit a gap. However, it is a double-edged sword. While it democratizes content, it also democratizes competition.

Actors who found it hard to break into films can now reach audiences directly, yet they must still navigate the biases and branding that come with switching mediums.

However, the OTT platforms are not levelled ground for actors to reinvent themselves and break free from the shackles of their earlier mediums. The industry remains haunted by perceptions and bias, while the presence of already-established stars overshadows newer talent.

Also, the fact that it continues to evolve brings hope for a bright future with more diversity in entertainment. In reality, the key to equality may lie in the readiness of viewers to accept any talent from anywhere.
