Homebound has been shortlisted in the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards. Mind you, we are not talking about Nomination. We are talking about Shortlisted, which is one step below nominated. Director Neeraj Ghaywan shared the news on Wednesday, calling it an important moment for the film and for Indian independent cinema.
The film was directed by Ghaywan and is now among a small group of international titles recognised by the Academy this year. Homebound earlier premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received attention for its heart-wrenching storytelling and strong performances.
Set in rural India, the film follows two childhood friends as they deal with change, ambition and personal loss. Their lives unfold against shifting social and economic realities. The cast includes Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor, all of whom have been praised for their performances.
The shortlist recognition comes after Homebound was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. The film has also travelled to several festivals in Europe and North America.
Many in the film industry see this moment as a positive sign for new Indian filmmakers. It highlights how simple, character-focused stories can connect with audiences around the world.
