This November has so far emerged as one of the most competitive months in this year’s calendar for the Indian OTT landscape. JioHotstar recently unveiled the release window for its upcoming dark romantic thriller, Ziddi Ishq, set to premiere on November 21.
However, this release strategy for Ziddi Ishq will surely not make sense to a lot of viewers, given that it is directly competing against the fan-favourite and highly anticipated The Family Man Season 3. On top of this, releasing just five days after, we have the global phenomenon, Stranger Things Season 5, the final chapter.
This scenario gives little to no room for Ziddi Ishq to breathe properly in terms of viewership. This strategy seems flawed, as viewers are likely to prioritise Srikant Tiwari’s latest mission. Why would JioHotstar sacrifice valuable opening weekend viewership for a new property by placing it in the shadow of a guaranteed hit?
Just as the domestic battle peaks, the entire streaming landscape will be rocked by the arrival of Stranger Things Season 5 (Part 1) on November 26. While this is a global series on Netflix, its immense popularity in India means it acts like a black hole, sucking away binge time and media attention for days, if not weeks.
So, it all comes down to Ziddi Ishq’s quality. If JioHotstar manages to deliver a gripping and intense romantic thriller, like the one promised in the promotional clips, then the streamer would be able to hold its ground strong.
Aaditi Pohankar, known for She, has a built-in fanbase for playing complex, boundary-pushing characters. JioHotstar seems to heavily rely on her acting abilities to give Ziddi Ishq a solid launch, regardless of the competition.
Ultimately, this weekend will be a pure test of the audience’s loyalty and time management. It is a win for the consumer, but a major, “Ziddi” gamble by JioHotstar that their new series can stand its ground amidst giants. Stay tuned for more updates.
