Netflix has dropped a new teaser for The Great Indian Kapil Show (TGIKS) Season 4, and it signals a substantial shift in the show’s format that appears to be an effort to silence critics and reignite the comedy scene.
Moving beyond the familiar setup of celebrity interviews and standard cast antics, the new teaser reveals that the show’s host, Kapil Sharma, is embracing a new direction: becoming a master of disguise and character comedy himself.
To be fair, this commitment is not entirely new, as the popular actor and comedian has done this gig for Colors and Sony TV. But when he arrived on Netflix, he restricted himself to celebrity interviews and taking humorous digs at his castmates. In Season 4, however, it seems he has put far more effort into his role as the show’s leading man.
The new clip shows the host in a variety of avatars. It showcases him transforming seamlessly into several distinct characters, including a hilarious Bihari politician, a regal yet eccentric king, and a witty, modern spin on a contemporary baba, among others.
These are entirely new characters that will debut alongside the already established and popular figures from the show, such as Chumbbak Mittal, Nakli Salman Khan, Nakli Donald Trump, and more.
By introducing these distinct, sketch-based personas, the series injects a much-needed freshness, directly addressing past criticism that the format had become repetitive or structurally rigid. The inclusion of new sketches allows for a broader range of satirical comedy that extends beyond the typical celebrity chat-show framework.
Perhaps the most significant and strategically smart outcome of this new approach is the reduced creative burden on the entire ensemble. For the past three seasons, the brilliance of supporting actors, especially the supremely talented Sunil Grover, has been carrying much of the show.
With Kapil himself stepping up to shoulder more of the character-driven work, the pressure is now balanced across the entire cast. This not only allows co-stars like Sunil Grover to shine when they appear but also frees the whole team to explore more creative and varied roles, fostering a more collaborative and versatile comedy environment.
The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 4 is set to premiere on 20 December on Netflix India. Stay tuned for more updates.
