ZEE5 has dropped a solid, action-packed trailer for Tehran, starring John Abraham. This much-anticipated geopolitical action thriller has been delayed for a long time, which led to confusion among fans about whether it would be released in theatres or drop directly on OTT. On July 31, the makers announced that Tehran is slated to come out on ZEE5. Now, the latest trailer has revealed that it will arrive on the platform on August 14.
The trailer shows several dangerous terrorist attacks in the form of bomb blasts, causing havoc among innocent people and taking several lives. John Abraham, as Rajeev Kumar from the Delhi Police, is tasked with finding and eliminating the mastermind behind these attacks.
While he rescues lives, Rajeev finds himself pursued by Iran, disowned by the same, and left unsupported by India. Is he a traitor or a patriot? The answer lies in the upcoming release of Tehran.
There’s no denying that Tehran is all set to become a massive streaming hit for the makers and ZEE5. Given Abraham’s OTT track record, including the phenomenal performance of The Diplomat, Tehran is likely to deliver substantial streaming numbers.
One of the things that clearly stands out in the new clip is how brutal, bloody, and realistic the action looks. The typical ‘masala’ element has been significantly toned down, and that’s a good sign. The leading man’s portrayal of a strict, hardened cop also comes across as compelling and grounded, rather than over-the-top. Overall, this one looks more like theatrical release material than an average OTT feature. So, what happened?
Well, it all comes down to how long the makers of Tehran could have waited to release it. With YRF’s War 2, starring the likes of Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, slated to hit theatres on August 14, there was no way Tehran could have thrived at the box office during that time. The hype around War 2 is very real and absolutely insane. It seems Tehran’s makers anticipated that their film could be completely swept away by War 2’s growing buzz with each passing day.
So, what about January 26 next year? Well, Tehran wouldn’t have survived that either. Why? Because the highly anticipated Border 2 is set to premiere during the Republic Day weekend. Sure, Tehran could’ve been slotted between these dates, but would that have helped the John Abraham-starrer make the same impact as a theatrical release on one of these peak days? The short answer is no.
Dropping Tehran on OTT on August 14 seems like a smart strategic move. Although it remains to be seen how much of a financial success it will be, especially considering what must be a hefty production budget, given the film’s scale of action.
Watch Tehran on August 14. Stay tuned for more updates. Here’s the new trailer!
