Netflix’s newest series The Bads of Bollywood is off to a roaring start, not just in India, but around the world.
The show is trending in at least a dozen countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Canada, Kuwait, Maldives, Mauritius, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, UAE, and more. It’s rare to see a “local” Hindi show get that kind of international reach so quickly.
But as of now…it’s getting warmer reactions compared to Netflix’s last big project Heeramandi.
For Aryan Khan and his team, this global spike is a win.
It shows Indian content still has massive exportability, stories rooted in Bollywood culture are also being consumed by viewers who may not understand every inside-joke, but connect with the drama, satire, and sheen.
But here’s the catch: international trending is exciting, but it doesn’t always translate to long-term value.
Netflix and other OTT platforms often hype trending stats hard, even if retention, completion rates, or deeper engagement aren’t yet proven. High visibility can help get eyeballs, but the real test is: do people stick around after “buzz week” ends?
Also, there’s a growing concern that in chasing global trends, creators may shift away from subtler storytelling that resonates deeply with local audiences.
There’s nothing wrong with glamour and satire, but balance matters, especially when your core audience is still in India.
Still, The Bads of Bollywood’s early global success is something to cheer about. If nothing else, it confirms that Bollywood stories can travel far beyond Mumbai. The hope now is that streaming platforms follow up with better language options, dubbing, and consistent availability, so local audiences feel seen and not just a launch statistic.
