‘The Greatest Rivalry-India Vs Pakistan’: New Lease For Netflix India Docs?

Netflix is brining a new documentary series ‘The Greatest Rivalry – India Vs Pakistan’ that chronicles the relationship between both countries, on and off-field. Helmed by Chandradev Bhagat and Stuart Sugg, ‘The Greatest Rivalry – India Vs Pakistan’ will premiere only on Netflix on 7h February, 2025.

‘The Greatest Rivalry – India Vs Pakistan’ is touted to be docu-series filled with emotions, cricketing actions and humor as it presents two sides of a coin – the competitiveness and unlikely camaraderie shared between the two teams.

The documentary will contain interactions and insights from cricketing personalities like Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Shoaib Akhtar, Ravi Ashwin, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Saurav Ganguly, Javed Miandad, Waqar Younis and many others as they tell the lesser known stories from on and off the field.

Up until now we have seen Netflix India documentaries mostly from the film industry like The Romantics’, ‘Modern Masters: S.S. Rajamouli’, ‘Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale’ or the upcoming ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous’ and the upcoming ‘The Roshans’ (January 17, 2025). And if not this, then there’s true crime ones like the ‘Indian Predator’ series, ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’, or ‘House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths’ and more.

But ‘The Greatest Rivalry – India Vs Pakistan’ is different and is likely to have a more wider and deeper range than any of Netflix India’s previous documentaries. That’s because for Indians, cricket is more than just sports and focusing on the angle that involves the highest level of drama, Netflix surely knows this one can be a jackpot if all goes well.

This could also mean a revived interest in documentaries from the Indian audience who prefer fictional content over non-fiction. And if Netflix is able to do it, it could open up the doors for more and more documentaries from varied sources and that could be really interesting given the global streamer’s expertise in the field.
