Karan Johar walks into a castle. No, it’s not the start of a joke, it’s the beginning of one of the most polarising but undeniably talked-about reality shows of the year: The Traitors. And now that the first season is done and dusted, it’s time to ask the inevitable question, was it a hit or a miss?
Let’s start with what Prime Video India did right.
The Traitors didn’t feel like a recycled reality format. It felt sleek, fresh, and definitely not PG. From the luxe production to the sneaky psychological twists, it pulled viewers into its world. The casting was especially well-crafted, an eclectic mix of old TV personalities, digital influencers, and Gen-Z charmers that somehow clicked. For once, different age groups of the audience weren’t complaining. They were curious. And they stayed curious.
Unlike many reality shows that fade after two episodes, The Traitors had enough masala and strategy to get people talking, and more importantly, caring. In fact, it managed something most new shows struggle with: fan feedback. Viewers weren’t just watching; they were offering ideas, sharing theories, and rooting for their favourites. That kind of engagement is rare.
But was it perfect? Not quite. Some felt the format could use tighter editing, and others thought the mind games could be even more intense in future seasons. There’s room to level up, but the base is solid.
So, hit or miss?
Let’s call it what it really is, a promising start. One that didn’t just stream, it sparked conversation. And in the crowded OTT landscape, that’s already a win.
