The Trial Season 2: Can Kajol’s Drama Redeem Itself?

JioHotstar has officially announced the second season of The Trial: Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha, starring Kajol. The show, based on The Good Wife by Michelle and Robert King, will see Kajol return as Noyonika Sengupta. While Season 1 had its share of compelling moments, it didn’t quite meet expectations. So the big question now is: can Season 2 fix what went wrong?

The first season of The Trial received mixed reactions from critics and audiences. Many felt it stuck too closely to the US original, offering very little in terms of fresh or local storytelling. It was often called a copy-paste job, which disappointed viewers hoping for an Indian take on the legal drama.

Adaptations do not always need to reinvent the wheel, but blindly following the source can make a show feel dull and predictable. That’s exactly what happened with Season 1. Several fans called it a “cheap copy,” lacking originality and depth.

In addition, the show struggled with inconsistent pacing, awkward dialogue, and a plot that felt far too generic. The performances, however, especially from Kajol and the supporting cast, were widely appreciated. Their work was one of the few things that stood out.

Criminal Justice, another legal drama on JioHotstar, has already set a high standard, especially with Pankaj Tripathi in the lead. This means The Trial has a lot of ground to cover if it wants to be seen as a worthy legal drama in its own right.

The upcoming season offers a second chance. If the makers can move beyond simply adapting The Good Wife and instead explore Indian legal and social realities, the show could find its own identity. Season 2 should focus on tighter writing, more relatable courtroom drama, and culturally grounded cases that resonate with viewers.

The emotional tension around Noyonika’s personal life and her husband’s scandal was one of the better elements in the first season. Exploring that further could give the new episodes more emotional depth. A sharper script and more natural dialogue will help too.

The Trial Season 2 premieres on JioHotstar on September 19. It has a real opportunity to turn things around. If it can shed its “adaptation” label and become a strong original story, Kajol’s legal drama may finally earn the appreciation it deserves.
