This Netflix Spy Drama Could Be Salakaar’s Antidote

Netflix’s Saare Jahan Se Accha is all set to premiere on August 13. While it benefits immensely from the upcoming Independence Day weekend and strong online buzz, some viewers have noticed a similarity in the show’s premise. A noticeable portion of the audience has pointed out that the core idea is similar to JioHotstar’s Salakaar. Both shows revolve around Indian spies’ operations to prevent Pakistan from making substantial progress in the development of nuclear weapons.

Salakaar came out first on August 8 and has been declared a ‘letdown’ by many critics and viewers. Despite having some great moments and benefiting from strong performances by its cast, this JioHotstar spy series ends up being a mess.

Apart from suffering from overly simplistic execution and a dull, conventional portrayal of Pakistanis, the series leans heavily on adrenaline-fuelled ‘deshbhakti’ and a simplistic ‘us vs. them’ narrative. These storyline elements have become severely outdated in today’s age.

This is why Saare Jahan Se Accha has an amazing opportunity to outshine Salakaar in every aspect. Created by Gaurav Shukla, known for his work on shows like Asur, the upcoming Netflix espionage thriller stars the highly regarded Pratik Gandhi, who gained immense critical acclaim for his performance in SonyLIV’s Scam 1992.

Based on the promotional clips released so far, the series appears to be a more cerebral, grounded, and strategic espionage thriller. Instead of being an action-and-patriotism fest, it looks more like a battle of wits.

Apart from Gandhi, Saare Jahan Se Accha also features another sensational talent, Sunny Hinduja (best known for TVF’s Aspirants), who looks excellent as ISI agent Murtaza Malik.

Moreover, the forthcoming Netflix series seems more character-driven than Salakaar. Pratik Gandhi’s portrayal of a quiet, calculated, and serious spy is intriguing, while Sunny Hinduja’s disciplined yet dangerous Pakistani antagonist is shaping up to be a treat to watch, especially for those who have been rooting for the actor since his breakthrough in Aspirants.

Set in the 1970s, Saare Jahan Se Accha appears to be inspired by a more realistic approach to espionage, focusing on tradecraft, intelligence gathering, and the mental toll of being a spy. The trailer’s use of Morse codes, intercepted calls, and other period-specific details showcases a commitment to an authentic portrayal of the era. It will be interesting to see how audiences receive the show. Stay tuned for more updates.
