Was Shifting From TV To Netflix A Bad Move For ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’?

Kapil Sharma took a big leap when his show shifted form television to global streaming giant Netflix. The excitement was high initially but unfortunately ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ fell flat just like its lame humour.

The lists of guests in season 1 was quite interesting and attractive, but still the show could not create much buzz or entertain either. With season 2 coming on 21st September whose trailer is now out, the anticipations have changed, though not for the good and there’s a lot less expectation from the team.

‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’s television version was a prime time show and its target audience was mostly middle class Indian families who loved a dose of laughter while having a family dinner. But not all of those families are subscribed to Netflix and that led to the loss of its major audience base.

OTTs are a go to for the younger, content savvy generation and if you wish to cater to them, you will have to be innovative and creative enough and plan your jokes in a way that makes them go ROFL. But sadly, Netflix’s ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ is following quite a similar template like before and that definitely isn’t working.

So the question is, did Kapil Sharma make a big mistake leaving television where he had one of the most hit shows in the history of television? To be honest, yes, to some extent and for two reasons.

One, as already mentioned, it lost its prime audience by coming to Netflix and second, it forgot that it’s not catering to the old audience anymore.

Despite bringing back Sunil Grover, who has been the show’s only highlight, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ could not uplift itself due to poor and unfocused writing. The lack of anything new and exciting is another drawback for the show. The guest pattern remains the same (stars doing their film promotion and some popular sportspersons in between), the jokes are old and don’t land, the show’s format is same old, with just a new set that actually doesn’t matter much to the OTT audience who seek good content over anything else.

Until ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ revamps itself and becomes really fun for its new audience, Netflix isn’t gonna keep waiting for long.
