Debuting on August 14, Prime Video’s Andhera is undoubtedly the platform’s substantial attempt to strengthen its horror content library, given that its last horror outing, Khauf, was met with both critical and audience acclaim. Which is why it’s frustrating to see that Prime Video is not actively marketing Andhera.
Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Kassim Jagmagia, Mohit Shah, and Karan Anshuman under the banner of Excel Entertainment, Andhera features a tremendous cast, consisting of talents such as Surveen Chawla, Prajakta Koli, Priya Bapat, Karanvir Malhotra, Vatsal Sheth, Parvin Dabas, and Pranay Pachauri in key roles.
Despite having such an impressive cast, along with the backing of Excel, Prime Video seems to be sleeping on Andhera. The platform’s lack of promotion for this series doesn’t make any sense, especially considering how tightly packed this Independence Day weekend is with plenty of new OTT releases in India.
SonyLIV and JioHotstar have already dropped Mayasabha and Salakaar, whereas Netflix India and SonyLIV are set to join the party with Saare Jahan Se Accha and Court Kacheri, both releasing on August 13. ZEE5 is also preparing to release John Abraham’s Tehran on August 15.
From the US, Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 (Netflix) is already doing well in India, and Alien: Earth (JioHotstar in India) has been met with critical acclaim from viewers. These are just some of the titles set to bombard Indian OTT audiences this Independence Day weekend.
Amidst all these titles, Prime Video’s Andhera could end up flying under the radar entirely. Adding fuel to the fire is the platform’s lack of strong marketing and promotion for the show. Khauf did an amazing job of rejuvenating the horror genre in India, and Andhera could do the same.
With its stellar cast, acclaimed production house, and the high bar set by Khauf, the lack of visibility for Andhera feels like a puzzle waiting to be solved. Prime Video has a potential hit on its hands, a show that could not only captivate horror fans but also further cement its place in the Indian horror space.
Despite the quiet launch, there’s still a chance for Andhera to make its mark. Prime Video’s strategy might be banking on the show’s quality to generate organic buzz, which seems like a bold move in a market saturated with loud campaigns. Given the positive reception to Khauf, the hope might be that a dedicated fan base will seek out Andhera and drive its popularity. For now, all we can do is hope this compelling new series doesn’t get lost in the noise and instead becomes the next big horror hit. Stay tuned for more updates.
