The Bengal Files is one of the most important and controversial films of the year. Although it did not become a theatrical blockbuster like The Kashmir Files, it did spark conversations especially around the politics of West Bengal.
The Bengal Files is set to stream on ZEE5 from November 21. Directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, the film explores the violence and unrest that took place in Bengal around the time of India’s partition. It follows two timelines, one set in the present and another in the past, connecting a modern investigation with historical events from 1946.
The film features Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi in key roles. Known for its intense storytelling, it aims to bring attention to stories that the director calls forgotten or untold. The Bengal Files continues Agnihotri’s series of politically charged dramas, following The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files.
The movie released in theatres earlier this year and sparked debates across the country for its portrayal of sensitive events. Some praised it for shedding light on painful parts of history, while others criticised it for being one-sided. Despite mixed reactions, it drew attention for its bold narrative and strong performances.
With its arrival on ZEE5, more viewers will now get to watch and judge the film for themselves. The streaming platform had earlier hosted The Kashmir Files in 2022, which found a large online audience. ZEE5 hopes to recreate similar interest with The Bengal Files, allowing people to revisit a controversial yet powerful piece of cinema from the comfort of their homes on November 21.
