Austin Butler is set to play the new Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming feature adaptation of the prominent novel American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. Lionsgate will produce the project, and Variety was the first to break the news. According to the publication, Guadagnino’s interpretation of the novel will differ from the overly violent and controversial 2000 film, which starred Christian Bale as the protagonist.
In the book, Bateman works as an investment banker in New York City and leads a double life as a serial killer.
Early rumours suggested that Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Saltburn, Priscilla) was being considered for the role, but the casting did not materialise. Interestingly, both Elordi and Butler have previously portrayed Elvis Presley on the big screen.
Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat) will write the script for the movie. He is reportedly crafting a new adaptation of Ellis’ controversial novel.
In addition to Christian Bale, the original American Psycho movie featured an impressive cast, including Jared Leto, Reese Witherspoon, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Matt Ross, and Bill Sage. The film was a modest box office success, earning $34 million against its $7 million budget during its theatrical release. However, it has since gained cult status among cinephiles. Patrick Bateman has also become a significant figure in meme culture. As of now, Lionsgate has not announced a release window or additional casting details. Stay tuned for more updates.
