Barbie 2 is moving forward at Warner Bros. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the sequel to the 2023 record-breaking Barbie has entered the early stages of development. The first film took the world by storm last year as part of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, serving as the brighter counterpart to Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. Defying all expectations, Barbie shattered numerous box office records and earned over $1.4 billion globally.
As per THR’s exclusive report, filmmakers and screenwriters Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig recently met with Warner Bros., where they pitched an idea for the sequel. The media outlet has revealed that the project is still in its “early stages.”
Talks of a Barbie sequel began in July last year when the first film emerged as a mammoth box-office success. The 2023 movie barely scratched the surface of the countless Barbies and Kens in Barbie Land. A sequel could explore the lives of other iconic dolls, such as Midge, Skipper, or even lesser-known characters.
Will Margot Robbie return in the sequel? It’s too soon to say. Barbie 2 could continue the story of the Stereotypical Barbie or shift its focus to an entirely new Barbie. Who knows? Given that Robbie served as a producer on the first film, the odds of her return are high.
We may even see a new Ken in the sequel, although it would be nearly impossible for another actor to surpass the charm and performance Ryan Gosling delivered in the first film. He was simply perfect!
That said, we shouldn’t get too excited just yet, as the news has not been made official. However, given the phenomenal response to the first film, it’s hard to imagine Mattel and Warner Bros. passing up the opportunity to earn some extra bucks (not that they need our encouragement!). Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
