Mickey 17, the latest Bong Joon Ho movie starring Robert Pattinson, is getting widespread recognition ever since its trailer dropped yesterday. The expectations are on the high end, given Joon Ho’s status as an Oscar-winning director. This will be his next film ever since the cultural phenomenon that was parasite. So, is Mickey 17 worthy of the Academy recognition?
Now Robert Pattinson has gone through a complete renaissance. His performance in The Batman and all the recent projects have elevated him to a very credible entity. His presence in the movie looks absolutely marvelous. But what is it exactly about?
Well, Mickey 17 is based off of a book titled Mickey 7. A sci-fi dystopian novel banking on the “an expendable employee of some nameless corporation shot into space for expansion” trope. Now Mickey is seen dying over and over again in this quest, and the movie would explore the psychology and the inherent meaninglessness of Mickey’s pursuit.
But is it Oscar-worthy? Now the movie is from a guy who basically ushered a new breeze in the alley of Hollywood. Frequently called the best of our times, Bong Joon Ho can certainly have another go at bagging Oscars, and so does Patterson with his exceptional performance. The movie is set to release on 31st January 2025.
