Can Venom 3 Redeem October’s Box Office After Joker 2's Failure

The month of October 2024 was expected to draw viewers and fill theaters. Anticipation for Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux soared after the record-smashing success of its critically acclaimed 2019 predecessor, which earned over $1 billion at the global box office. But no one—truly no one—anticipated the disaster that unfolded before our eyes with Joker 2. The messy and chaotic comic musical, or whatever the hell one might call it, left a crater-sized hole in October’s box office collections. So far, the sequel has managed to collect only $165 million against its massive $190-200 million budget. Now, all hopes rest on Venom: The Last Dance.

According to Deadline, the upcoming Tom Hardy starrer may have a $70 million opening, which would be less than the opening weekend numbers of its predecessors. The original 2018 film debuted with $80.1 million domestically (U.S. and Canada), while its sequel, Let There Be Carnage, earned over $90 million in its domestic opening weekend. Their total global collections stand at $856 million and $506 million, respectively.

So, how much will Venom 3 earn at the box office? Well, it all depends on the film’s reception among both audiences and critics. After the disappointing performance of Joker 2 and the current shaky status of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it’s difficult to predict how this one will fare.

Venom 3’s opening weekend could potentially go down as the second-best comic book film debut of 2024, behind Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned over $211 million domestically during its opening weekend.

Kelly Marcel makes her feature directorial debut with Venom 3, which stars Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham. Stay tuned for more updates.
