“Creature Commandos” First Reactions: A Stellar Start For Gunn’s DCU

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU needed a strong launch to soar and capture the hearts of the DC fanbase. Its first official entry, Creature Commandos—also the inaugural chapter of the franchise’s Gods and Monsters storyline—has taken off with a terrific start. Early reactions to this animated James Gunn creation are highly positive, likely offering Gunn a huge sigh of relief given how much is at stake for the DCU.

The overwhelmingly positive response to Creature Commandos raises the stakes for David Corenswet’s Superman, the franchise’s first-ever live-action theatrical project. However, the success of Creature Commandos strengthens confidence that Superman will deliver, especially with Gunn overseeing its direction and development.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the latest DCU animated series has debuted with an impressive 94% “fresh” score, based on 17 reviews. The story revolves around a dangerous and unpredictable black ops team of monsters assembled by Suicide Squad creator Amanda Waller (voiced by Viola Davis).

IGN has praised the show for its rock-solid story and performances, calling it a “bridge between the old DCEU and the new DCU.”

ComicBook, in its five-star review, believes that Creature Commandos is the best possible start to Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe. The platform also praised the show’s bold storytelling, and electrifying characters, and called it the perfect launching pad for the new superhero franchise.

Phase Hero also shares ComicBook’s sentiments, and has rated the series 9 out of 10.

Discussing Film, called the show an action-packed and colourful addition to Gunn’s filmography.

Calling the series “a monster hit”, FandomWire praised the show’s creator’s ability to perfectly blend humour and heart.

Creature Commandos stars Steve Agee, Anya Chalotra, Maria Bakalova, Frank Grillo, Zoe Chao, David Harbour, Indira Varma, Alan Tudyk, and Viola Davis. It is scheduled to premiere on December 5. Stay tuned for more updates.
