Finally, our prayers have been answered. Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 brings back The Defenders.
When Netflix’s Marvel universe was dismantled in 2018, fans were left with agonising cliffhangers: Luke Cage had become the “Sheriff” of Harlem’s underworld, and Danny Rand was wandering Asia with Orson Randall’s dual pistols.
We already know that Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones will appear in future episodes of Born Again Season 2. Now, the latest update on the returns of Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) has brought a lot of excitement to the Marvel fanbase.
Tweets about the appearances of Colter and Jones on the sets of Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 have already started flooding in, with both actors trying hard to protect their faces. But sadly, their efforts went in vain, as some photographers managed to capture their faces on set.
While The Defenders miniseries gave us a taste of the team-up, the standout chemistry was always between Luke and Danny. The “Heroes for Hire” dynamic, the unbreakable man and the living weapon, is one of Marvel’s most iconic partnerships.
The new set photos show Colter and Jones alongside Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, signalling that Born Again isn’t just a Daredevil sequel. It’s also a Defenders revival.
After years of speculation about whether Disney would “soft reboot” these characters with new actors, seeing the original cast back in the saddle confirms that Marvel Studios is finally embracing the Netflix legacy in its entirety.
It’s no secret that Iron Fist had a rocky start. However, Finn Jones’ appearance in Luke Cage Season 2 showed a more zen, confident, and capable Danny Rand that fans actually loved.
By bringing Jones back under the guidance of the Born Again creative team, which has already proven it can handle gritty, grounded action, Marvel has a chance to give the character the “corridor fight” level of respect he deserves.
The most intriguing detail from the leaks involves Luke Cage’s attire. Spotted in a sharp business suit rather than his classic yellow hoodie, speculation is rampant that the MCU is pulling from the recent “Mayor Luke Cage” comic arc.
In the comics, Luke takes over City Hall after Wilson Fisk’s reign of terror ends. If Born Again Season 2 concludes with the downfall of Kingpin’s mayoralty, Season 3 could see Luke Cage stepping up to lead New York City. Having a superhero in the Mayor’s office would create a fascinating new status quo for Matt Murdock to navigate.
For a long time, the MCU felt like it was losing its “neighbourhood” feel, with a growing focus on multiversal threats and cosmic battles. Daredevil: Born Again is the corrective measure. By reuniting the Defenders, Marvel is rebuilding the street-level corner of the universe that made the original Netflix run so special. Stay tuned for more updates.
