Days of Thunder’ Sequel in Development: Tom Cruise Seeks to Reignite NASCAR Magic

Regarding a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR racing movie Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise is negotiating with Paramount. Days of Thunder, which had a $60 million production budget, grossed $157 million worldwide despite not being a box office success.

With his racing drama, which was directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, Cruise thinks he can do a similar magic. Although there have been previous rumours about a Thunder rebirth, Cruise rejected the concept of a relaunch as a Paramount TV series.

With Brad Pitt starring in Ford v. Ferrari, Ferrari, and F1, racing films have become more and more popular recently. Given the abundance of current projects involving fast cars on tracks, the idea of bringing Thunder back to life is intimidating. Nevertheless, none of the other games particularly delve into the NASCAR racing scene, which has a distinct Americana feel in contrast to the more European-based Le Mans and Formula 1 worlds. All of Crise’s projects get script approval.

Fans, notably Quentin Tarantino, have taken a strong interest in Tony Scott’s racing film Days of Thunder. The movie featured the joy of early American International Picture racing films, complete with a big budget, big cast, and a big director. In the movie, Cruise met his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, who played a neurosurgeon and was romantically involved with his USAC racer Cole Trickle.
