On one side, we have Clayface, James Watkins’s upcoming movie that has generated tremendous buzz online after its first teaser came out. The teaser received a spectacular response from DC fans. On the other hand, we have the HBO series, Lanterns, and its colour grading controversy. This scenario has also become the talk of the town.
In a move that has left fans scratching their heads, DC Studios recently pulled trailers for the show from most of its official platforms.
Lanterns was supposed to be a fresh start for the emerald knights. Starring Kyle Chandler as the veteran Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as the newcomer John Stewart, the show is described as a gritty mystery, taking inspiration from the iconic HBO series, True Detective.
However, just as the hype was building for its August 2026 release, the trailers vanished. While it’s common for studios to cycle through marketing materials, the total removal of a major trailer often signals a course correction.
In this case, many believe the studio is responding to a wave of online criticism regarding the show’s look and feel.
The biggest point of contention among fans, and even industry legends, is the show’s tone. Co-creator Damon Lindelof previously made comments about “grounding” the series and perhaps moving away from the vibrant, cosmic energy usually associated with Green Lantern.
This didn’t sit well with everyone. Legendary comic writer Grant Morrison weighed in with a sharp critique, suggesting that watering down the source material is a mistake. Even Zack Snyder, the architect of the previous DC cinematic era, reportedly chimed in on the debate.
The trailer itself was criticised for its drastically toned-down colour grading. For a show about characters who literally use light as a weapon, fans found the visuals a bit too dark and grey. It is highly possible that James Gunn and the team at HBO decided to pull the footage to re-polish the visual effects and colour timing to better satisfy the audience.
Adding to the intrigue is a new teaser poster that features Hal and John standing inside a massive Green Lantern ring. The tagline reads: “Only one can wear the ring.”
This has sparked intense speculation. In the comics, there are thousands of Lanterns, but this slogan suggests a high-stakes competition or a tragic passing of the torch.
Since Aaron Pierre is already confirmed to appear in future DCU films like Man of Tomorrow, the writing seems to be on the wall: John Stewart is the future, which leaves fans wondering what fate awaits the iconic Hal Jordan.
While a trailer being pulled can look like a “red flag,” it might actually be a good sign. It shows that James Gunn and DC Studios are listening. Rather than forging ahead with a version of the show that fans find visually dull, they may be taking the time to inject that “green” back into the Green Lanterns.
