When Free Guy was released in 2021, there was an instant craze for the character. perhaps because it was yet another instance of Ryan Reynolds being himself. And even though the internet seems to love Ryan Reynolds, 20th-century Fox is not indulging in any sequels for the movie.
While some fans are disappointed with the decision, many realize that it’s the only logical decision as far as the trend goes. The movie was set in a digital world where a non-playable character gains sentience. The movie worked quite well on the box office and amassed an 80% on rotten tomatoes with 7.1 on imdb.
The recent trends around sequels are not really promising. Given that the movies that were even Oscar-winning couldn’t produce any good sequels. The movie on its own ended on a rather high note. So it makes it quite redundant to have a sequel. If anything, a sequel to a movie has the potential to stray away from the original. Furthermore, the audience is saturated with sequels and franchises.
The constant complaint about a lack of original movies is a problem indeed. Amidst such complaints, the decision to not make a sequel seems to be a smart one. The original movie made a good profit on the box office, making about 331.5 million off of the 125 million budget. It would have been labeled a mediocre cashgrab made out of a good movie.
