The much-awaited sequel from Ridley Scott, Gladiator II, had its first screening at the Paramount Studios lot, and the reviews are positive. It’s kind of a risky business to make a sequel these days, as the entire industry has been in a slump. With everyone making remakes of sequels, the public is a little bummed out with the watered-down versions of the franchises being passed on to them to chew on. Amidst this, the positive reactions for Gladiator II are like a fresh breeze.
Starring Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, and Pedro Pascal, the movie leaves no scope for complaints when it comes to the quality of performances by the actors. Ridley Scott has once again managed to get the audience cheering. As the reviews mention, the set pieces and the action sequences were expected to be the strong points; however, the movie serves a compelling plot that manages to do justice with the Oscar-winning first movie.
Although more accurate reviews will start totrickle down as the movie comes closer to its release, it can be said that the movie has a promising future. The original 2000 movie was a masterpiece from Riley Scott, which went on to achieve widespread acknowledgements. The movie bagged a total of five Oscars and was a commercial success.
Since then, Scott has grown as a filmmaker, and so have his characters. Gladiator II will focus on Lucius Verus II (Mescal), the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, showcasing his return to Rome for vengeance, but as a gladiator. The power struggle, politics, and historical glory all return to the Arena with Gladiator II.
The movie is set to release on November 22, 2024.
