HBO Max’s ‘DC Crime’ Puts Superman’s Pal in the Spotlight

DC Studios and HBO Max are set to develop a fictional true-crime series titled ‘DC Crime’ within the DCU. The project will be presented in the format of a true-crime documentary series, hosted by none other than the “ladies’ man” and Clark Kent’s in-office mate, Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo). Admit it, Olsen had some serious rizz in James Gunn’s Superman film.

Season 1 will reportedly focus on Gorilla Grodd, a notorious DC villain best known for his frequent clashes with The Flash. James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers, with Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault acting as showrunners, writers, and executive producers. Warner Bros. Television will produce the series.

Representatives for DC Studios, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. have yet to comment on the development.

Having previously created the critically acclaimed Netflix mockumentary series American Vandal, which cleverly satirised the true-crime genre, Yacenda and Perrault are well-versed in this form of storytelling. The duo also created the Paramount+ mockumentary ‘Players’, centred on the world of eSports. Additionally, Yacenda was involved with ‘Chad Powers’ at FX.

Gorilla Grodd, one of DC’s most fascinating villains, is a super-intelligent, telepathic gorilla from Gorilla City, a hidden, technologically advanced civilisation in Africa.

Grodd gained his genius-level intellect and psychic abilities, including mind control, after a spaceship crashed near his home. His origin story often ties into his obsession with world domination, leading to countless confrontations with The Flash (usually Barry Allen). Their rivalry is legendary, rooted in Grodd’s relentless attempts to use his powers and technology to enslave humanity.

Gunn and Safran are currently building a unified film and television universe for DC. The television slate includes the upcoming HBO drama ‘Lanterns’, starring Kyle Chandler (as Hal Jordan) and Aaron Pierre (as John Stewart), which is expected to premiere in early 2026. Additionally, reports suggest that a ‘V for Vendetta’ television series is also in the works. Stay tuned for more updates.
