Marvel Zombies Is a Feast of Gore, Not of Story

Marvel Zombies, which also marks Marvel Studios’ first major foray into adult, gory animation, has opened to somewhat mixed reviews from critics and viewers. Considering fans’ growing excitement and anticipation for what Kevin Feige and his team have in store with Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Home, Marvel Zombies feels like a loose cannon and a final echo of the messy MCU Multiverse Saga.

Critics have praised the show’s TV-MA rating, along with its unflinching violence, gore, and spooky atmosphere. However, they have heavily criticized its underdeveloped storylines, pointing out that many characters needed more screen time.

The cast’s voice performances have been widely praised, though critics noted the lack of fresh ideas in the narrative. Still, the series has plenty of standout moments, with Blade and Iman Vellani’s performance singled out as the best parts of the show.

Other reviewers, however, found the show lacking in substance. They criticized the story for relying on tired and familiar tropes and felt that the overall plot lacked emotionally grounded stakes. Some also argued that the series would have benefited from more episodes to allow for deeper story development.

Marvel Zombies is Marvel Studios’ first R-rated animated series and the third release of Phase 6. It centers on a zombie apocalypse that threatens Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Featuring talents like Iman Vellani, Simu Liu, and Florence Pugh, the series follows some of the MCU’s top heroes as they fight to stop the undead, many of whom were once their friends and family.

As of now, it’s unclear whether Marvel Zombies will get a second season. But given its bold handling of gore and horror, Marvel may greenlight its second season in the future. Stay tuned for more updates.
