Although “Miller’s Girl” is now available on OTT platforms, it sparks quite the debate: not just about the subject matter but even the language choice. Dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and surprisingly, Marathi, some major contenders like Kannada and Malayalam seem to have been left behind. This raises the question: why Marathi? Would Hindi not work perfectly well for the Marathi audience? Such an apparent capability misallocation. They could have easily been duplicating work on audiences that don’t even need to be catered to, would they not? Let’s break this down.
So, Tamil and Telugu make sense, especially since their reach is massive. Hindi is a no-brainer with pan-India reach. But seeing Marathi on that list raises a few eyebrows. Sure, it is nice to have some visibility for just about everybody, However, when a significant portion of the southern audience-more particularly, Kannada and Malayalam speakers-will be gone, it feels like a strange choice. Should we not also note that Marathi folks already consume a lot of Hindi content without the need for a dubbing effort?
Why not focus on languages that can rope more viewership from areas that hesitate because they do not have enough duos? The Kannada and Malayalam markets are rapidly developing in the OTT space, so they’re rather big misses for the audience.
The movie itself has a beautiful essence with stars like Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega. But with a film like “Miller’s Girl,” where tension and nuance are key, the right dubbing can make-or-break the spectator experience. Western film is a tight watch, twisted in its narrative climaxes that lend itself to increased accessibility among a wider regional audience. While the dubbing is competent, it lacks the sort of global appeal you would otherwise look for in a title like this.
If OTT platforms wish to become fully global, they should understand how crucial it is that dubbing choices are made smartly. It isn’t merely the difference between adding more languages, it is the matter of adding the right languages.
