Mirror, Mirror On the Wall, Is Snow White The Worst Disney Remake Of All?

Do you remember Grumpy’s words from the original 1937 Snow White animated classic: “Mark my words, there’s trouble a-brewin”? Well, the latest trailer for its live-action reimagining hints at the trouble the movie itself might face. The clip provides a proper look at the leading ladies: Rachel Zegler as the titular protagonist and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The live-action version is set to hit theaters worldwide on March 21, 2025.

We have three words to describe the new Snow White trailer: “an ugly mess.” Zegler seems completely miscast in this role. She tries hard to embody the optimism, kindness, and innocence that made Snow White such an iconic and beloved Disney character but comes across as entirely out of place. On the other hand, Gadot appears to lack effort in her performance. Yes, it’s just a trailer, and the full movie is yet to be seen, but a nearly three-minute trailer is often enough to give us a sense of what’s to come.

And let’s not even get started on the Seven Dwarfs. They look absolutely terrible, with the CGI work on them appearing disappointingly poor.

The fate of the upcoming Snow White live-action remake looks grim. Its total budget has ballooned up to $269.4 million, meaning the movie needs to perform exceptionally well to become a box-office success for Disney. However, that seems increasingly unlikely given the mounting backlash against both Rachel Zegler and the film itself.

The latest trailer has received 62% dislikes within just two hours of its release, and this percentage is expected to climb in the coming days. This is certainly a troubling sign for Disney. It also appears that the studio is well aware of the hostility surrounding the project, which has been evident since the day it was announced.

Zegler’s casting sparked widespread criticism from fans, who felt she was not the right choice for the role. The actress has also faced significant racial backlash, compounding the controversy. Furthermore, her controversial statements have worsened the situation for Disney, with many fans accusing her of imposing an unwanted “pseudo-feminist” take on the iconic character.

In a September interview with Variety, Zegler discussed updates to the original Snow White story, highlighting that “it’s no longer 1937.” She explained that Snow White no longer focuses on “dreaming about true love,” but instead aspires to become the leader she believes she can be.

During another interview at the D23 Expo, Zegler described Prince Charming as “a guy who literally stalks her.” The latter wakes up Snow White from her sleep after kissing her in the original animated classic. However, the actress has confirmed that the scene has been excluded from the forthcoming adaptation.
