Mubi’s shopping spree continues, and this time it has something one of a kind in its shopping list. Back when the entire world was under lockdown, people were proving how creativity prevails when given time to flourish. Two theater artists, Sam and Penny, embarked to do the most absurd thing and recreate the entire story of Hamlet in GTA V Online.
Mubi has gone ahead to acquire all the U.S. rights to the documentary aptly named “Grand Theft Hamlet.” This is perhaps the most unorthodox portrayal of Hamlet. As the description mentions how volent the virtual world of GTA could get. The movie had an initial release on 10 March 2024 and has gone on to acquire recognition at multiple film festivals.
It even has an award to its name. The documentary has won the SXSW grand jury award in the documentary feature category. The documentary has a rating of 94% on rotten tomatoes. The virtual recreation is a testament to how the mediums collide among themselves. Now Mubi plans to release the documentary in early 2025.
Mubi has been acquiring these projects ever since The Substance grossed nearly 10 million domestically. The other high-profile titles that Mubi has acquired include Queer, Bird, and Pavements. It is to be seen how the adaptation pays off for Mubi. The next title of GTA is ready to debut in 2026. Given the hype of the gaming franchise, the adaptation has stirred up the interest of both theater and gaming communities.
