Netflix and Sony Double Down With a Mega Global Deal

The “Netflix and Chill” vibe just got a massive, multi-billion dollar upgrade. Netflix and Sony Pictures have officially renewed their vows, signing a massive multi-year deal that ensures the streaming giant remains the exclusive global streaming home for Sony’s biggest blockbusters.

While the suits are keeping the exact receipts under wraps, industry insiders say this deal is worth upwards of $7 billion. To put that in perspective, their initial U.S.-only deal was worth about $2.5 billion. This isn’t just a renewal. It’s a massive expansion.

Essentially, Netflix is paying top dollar to make sure that once a Sony movie leaves the movie theatre and finishes its digital rental run, it heads straight to Netflix, and nowhere else.

The new global takeover begins rolling out in 2026, with the full global effect hitting by early 2029.

Sony is one of the last “independent” giants in Hollywood (meaning they don’t have their own streaming service like Disney+ or Max), and their upcoming slate is absolutely stacked. Because of this deal, you can expect to stream these titles on Netflix in the coming years.

We should expect Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse arriving safely on Netflix after their blockbuster theatrical runs and not going anywhere else. In addition, we have the highly anticipated sequels to The Social Network and Jumanji. We should also not forget about Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-film project covering each member of The Beatles.

Netflix will also get access to a treasure trove of older Sony movies and TV shows to keep your “Recently Added” section fresh.

There’s a reason Sony is sticking with the streaming giant. We’ve seen it time and again: a movie does well in theatres, but it becomes a cultural phenomenon the second it hits Netflix. Films like Uncharted, It Ends With Us, and Anyone But You saw massive second waves of popularity (and social media edits) once they became available to Netflix’s global audience.

This news comes at a wild time for the industry. While Netflix is locking down Sony, they are also in the middle of a mind-blowing $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (the home of HBO and DC).

If all these deals go through, Netflix won’t just be a streaming service anymore. It’ll be the undisputed king of Hollywood. For us? It just means we’ll never have to cancel our subscription, because everything we want to watch ends up there anyway. Stay tuned for more updates.
