Netflix’s New Thriller Continues India’s K-Drama Craze

K-dramas are nothing short of an unstoppable cultural force in the world of OTT. Netflix hits such as Genie, Make A Wish, When Life Gives You Tangerines, and Trigger have performed exceptionally well both in India and globally. Now, As You Stood By has emerged as another major victor from the K-drama genre.

According to the latest data from FlixPatrol, As You Stood By ranks #3 on Netflix’s Top 10 Weekly Shows list (globally, as of November 9). The K-drama has been well received in India too, where it currently holds the #6 spot on Netflix India’s chart, alongside Genie and Make A Wish (#10). Meanwhile, it sits comfortably at #1 in South Korea, cementing both its critical and commercial success.

Fresh off its November 7 release, the series has skyrocketed up the Netflix charts, reaffirming that the streaming giant’s multi-billion-dollar investment in Korean content continues to pay off in every major market, including India.

While K-dramas are often defined by glossy rom-coms or sweeping historical sagas, As You Stood By breaks the mould as a dark, character-driven story that highlights the genre’s emotional depth and range.

Based on the Japanese novel Naomi and Kanako, the series follows two friends, Eun-su (Jeon So-nee) and Hui-su (Lee Yoo-mi), who are pushed to the brink by domestic violence. Their desperate pact to murder an abusive husband and frame it on a doppelganger sets the stage for a tense, morally complex psychological thriller.

The show has been widely praised for its unflinching portrayal of trauma, female solidarity, societal indifference, and the cyclical nature of abuse. This raw, emotionally charged storytelling transcends language barriers and has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

Its #6 ranking in India shows that K-drama thrillers are no longer a niche fascination, they’ve become a mainstream viewing habit, standing shoulder to shoulder with Bollywood and Hollywood productions.

For Netflix, this marks yet another victory in its long-term strategy. The company’s massive $2.5 billion investment in South Korean content over four years (announced in 2023) has solidified its global dominance, successfully harnessing the Hallyu (Korean Wave) to expand its international subscriber base.

The success of As You Stood By once again proves that global audiences are hungry for authentic, high-quality, non-English storytelling. Stay tuned for more updates.
