Every once in a while, a film reminds us of what streaming used to feel like in its early days. Songs of Paradise on Prime Video does exactly that. Back then, OTT platforms gave us stories about people we didn’t know but should have, told with honesty and courage. This film brings back that spirit.
Directed by Danish Renzu, Songs of Paradise is based on the life of Kashmiri singer Raj Begum, often called the Melody Queen of Kashmir. She was the first female voice on Radio Kashmir, breaking into a world that was not ready for women to sing in public. The movie shows her struggles, her strength, and how she carved her place in history with music as her weapon.
Saba Azad plays Raj Begum in her younger days while Soni Razdan takes on the role in later years. Both bring warmth and fire to the character. The film also features Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, and Lillete Dubey, who add depth to Raj Begum’s journey.
In today’s political climate, a story like this feels important. It is not just about one woman’s voice but about remembering the power of art and resilience in the face of silence. For many of us, Raj Begum is a name we are hearing for the first time. But by the end of the film, she becomes unforgettable.
Songs of Paradise premieres on August 29, 2025, only on Prime Video.
