Severance follows Mark (Adam Scott), a severed employee at Lumon Industries. The company is known for using a medical procedure called ‘Severance’ to separate the memories of its employees, depending on whether they are at work or not. While at work, the severed employees, known as ‘innies,’ cannot recall anything from their life outside the office. When they leave, they become ‘outies,’ unable to remember what they did at work. As a result, the employees are forced to live two separate lives with different agendas and personas. Things at Lumon begin to unravel as Mark gradually uncovers a series of conspiracies within the company.
Season 1 of Severance was a critical hit, earning a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It received 14 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor, and Outstanding Writing. The series was particularly praised for its original storyline, sharp editing, and brilliant performances from its cast.
