Hailed as the “Goonies in space,” the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Disney+ series is finally finding its feet in the streaming world. After opening to a somewhat muted response from the Star Wars fanbase, this Jon Watts project has now climbed into the streaming service’s Top 10 list. As of December 30, 2024, the show ranks #5 on Flix Patrol’s rankings of Top 10 Disney+ shows. To be honest, it deserves a higher spot, as this series is a brilliant and more light-hearted addition to the iconic space opera franchise. It is genuinely thrilling and fun for all ages.
Even on Rotten Tomatoes, Skeleton Crew has earned a ‘fresh’ score of 91% based on 67 certified reviews. Compared to the last Star Wars outing, The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew has received a more positive response from audiences, boasting an 80% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
When it comes to budget, Skeleton Crew was made on a relatively modest budget of $136 million, according to Forbes. In contrast, The Acolyte had a massive $230 million budget, which seems unjustifiable on Disney and Lucasfilm’s part.
So far, we have five adventurous and highly entertaining episodes from the latest Jude Law starrer. Law shines as Jod Na Nawood, exuding charm and confidence in the role. The next three episodes will be helmed by the exceptionally talented Bryce Dallas Howard (a Star Wars alum who has directed multiple episodes of The Mandalorian), Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), and Jon Watts himself, known for directing the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy with Tom Holland. With such talent behind the camera, the series is poised to conclude on a highly epic and satisfying note.
The only drawback for Skeleton Crew is that it doesn’t take place within the Skywalker saga. On the bright side, this very distinction makes it a standout, as it carves a completely new path in the expansive Star Wars universe. Most importantly, it has found its place in the hearts of fans. Stream all episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew now on Disney+.
