Netflix has released the first five minutes of the highly anticipated Stranger Things Season 5, and fans wasted no time firing up the “fan theory mill”, speculating on how the endgame will unfold and how Will is linked to Vecna and the notorious, petrifying, and grotesque alternate dimension, the Upside Down.
The reveal of the first five minutes, particularly the chilling flashback to Will Byers’ first encounter with Vecna in 1983, has ignited a firestorm of theories across social media.
The opening scene takes the audience back to Will, alone in Castle Byers, trapped in the Upside Down shortly after his disappearance, where he’s eventually dragged by a Demogorgon to a terrifying first meeting with Vecna (then Henry Creel). Vecna pins him to the wall and thrusts a tentacle into his mouth, whispering, “You and I, we are going to do such beautiful things together, William.”
It’s a chilling yet exhilarating moment that lays the groundwork for countless fan theories. The opening confirms that Vecna targeted Will immediately after his disappearance, proving that Will has been central to Vecna’s plan from the very beginning.
One of the most prominent theories suggests that Will’s mind, and his desperate desire to hide in his safe space, Castle Byers, was so powerful that his emotional distress created the Upside Down’s mirror version of Hawkins, frozen on the day he vanished (November 6, 1983).
We also see Vecna injecting a vine into Will’s mouth, leading many to believe he implanted part of his consciousness inside Will, making him a vessel in the real world for his larger plan of destruction. This could explain why Will still shares a psychic connection with the Upside Down and continues to sense Vecna’s presence.
The bond that Vecna forced upon Will in 1983 never truly left him, as shown repeatedly across previous seasons. This strange psychic link appears to be the key to Vecna’s ultimate victory, and Will may have to sacrifice that part of himself to destroy him.
This suggests that Will’s internal struggle with the Upside Down is literally the key to the final battle. He is either the ultimate weapon against Vecna or the final host required to merge the two worlds.
The opening scene also establishes that Vecna has been the puppet master since the very beginning, the one orchestrating the horrors in Hawkins from Season 1 onward. Everything that has happened, from the Demogorgon to the Mind Flayer’s possession of Will, has been part of Vecna’s grand design through his connection to Will.
The final episodes may heavily rely on time jumps or psychic visions that parallel Will’s past with his final confrontation, showing how his Season 1 ordeal was merely the prologue to Vecna’s endgame. The Duffer Brothers have also confirmed the use of de-aging technology to revisit key moments from earlier seasons.
There’s no denying that Will Byers is the final key, either to defeating Vecna or being completely consumed by him. The terrifying first five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 have cemented his role as the true protagonist of the saga.
Stranger Things Season 5 will roll out its final episodes across late November and December. Volume 1 drops on November 26, followed by Volume 2 on December 25. The series finale arrives on New Year’s Eve, December 31, and will also be screened in select U.S. theatres for a special viewing experience. Stay tuned for more updates.
